Domaine Jean-Philippe Padié Vin de France Petit Taureau 2014

Carignan, Syrah
Organic Status:
12.81% (Number on label may differ)
Schist and chalk, light and dark (vines facing east and west), yin and yang (Carignan and Syrah), this wine is a Petit Taureau, a bull, but a gentle little one! Made from biodynamically farmed vines without sulfites by Jean-Philippe Padié who is perhaps the most playful and possesses the lightest touch of the 5 producers who work out of Calce to produce some of the finest natural wines of Southern France. Like the Fleur de Cailloux, this gorgeous, soft, gentle red is a brilliant expression of the stony soils it's born from, with subtle complexity, cool freshness and fantastic Mediterranean fruit and energy. Just 12.81% alcohol and 12 mg/L SO2 Tot.
Tasting Notes:
This has a lovely, fascinating, beguiling nose of floral violet, cassis, red cherry, black tea, thyme and iron aromas almost shockingly delicate for a wine from the Mediterranean. The palate lives up to expectation, with a gentle lightness of touch, roundness and juicy succulent fruit flavours. It caresses the palate while imagining the stones it's grown on.
Vintage Notes:
2014 was a challenging and complicated year in the Languedoc Roussillon, overall wet and cool by comparison with average. However, the best vignerons turned this to their advantage: while the cool weather gave freshness and the rain gave juice. Moreover, there was little rot in well-farmed, well-sited organic and biodynamic vines, so producers were able to harvest quite late to gain excellent flavour ripeness while maintaining attractively low alcohol. It's a delicious follow up to the very fine 2013.
From several small parcels of 30 to 45 year old vines. Carignan on limestone, Syrah on schist, Mourvèdre on schist, and Grenache on limestone. The vineyards are worked organically and biodynamically by hand, using a donkey. The climate is Mediterranean, dry and hot but it's cooled by breezes from the sea a few kilometres away and from the Tramontane northerly wind.
Made naturally and without any sulphur or other additives, by an old-fashioned semi carbonic maceration process. Unlike previous years, the Carignan was de-stemmed and with whole bunch Syrah put in a closed concrete tank for 10 days to start the fermentation, intra-cellular. The wine was run off, skins and bunches pressed very slowly, and the wine left to continue to ferment for 1 month in concrete tank, then left to mature for 9 months.
