Southern Rhône, France

Domaine la Garrigue Vacqueyras 2012

Grenache 80%, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre
Organic Status:
14.20% (Number on label may differ)
Garrigue by name, Garrigue by nature, this wonderful old, and old school, estate gets great balance and freshness, a Provençal herb, floral and mineral character from the hot plateau of Vacqueyras by sticking to now rather old fashioned methods (or young hipster!) of organic farming, whole bunch fermentation, basket pressing, long ageing in concrete tank and minimal intervention. Here is the essence of Southern Rhône Grenache. The production volume is brilliantly consistent and allows great cost performance pricing.
Tasting Notes:
This wine offers classic Southern Rhône aromas of Provencal herb and strawberry, with a touch of black olive and black pepper. Both aromas and palate are attractively savoury and gentle, with neither the sweetness nor weight that kills many a Rhône wine! Here the tannins are plump and refreshing, the fruit is evocative of Provence and it finishes juicy and long with a touch of bitterness intended to marry charcuterie and meat. A stunner!
Vintage Notes:
Very, very good! 2012 winter was freezing, cleaning up the vines (but also killing many old vines), spring was wet and cool, helping the water table, and the summer was largely hot and dry, conditions which have made for a very good vintage. Yields were low, but the quality high, with aromatic and complex fruit, good freshness, despite low acid levels at harvest, and ripe tannins.
Cultivated organically, without the use of any chemical or synthetic products, from around 45 hectares of different vineyards mostly on the Garrigues but also in the Dentelles hills. The soils are a mix of stony and clay-limestone. The climate is Mediterranean, hot and dry and marked by the Mistral wind. Most of the vineyards are planted in traditional gobelet style. The vines are 60 to 80 years old. Grapes are hand picked.
Traditional! The grapes are not de-stemmed, thus whole bunch fermentation, using wild yeasts only, in concrete tank, with temperatures controlled to around 30ºC. A remontage is carried out twice a day for two weeks and the wine macerates on the skins for a total of around 3 weeks. The wine is matured 18 to 24 months in concrete tank. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
