One of Gangloff's best ever wines. Yves has never compromised his style. Very much like Laurent Charvin or Jean-Paul Versino further south, he works a classic, great terroir in a classical manner: organically and making the wines by mostly, usually, whole bunch with minimal intervention, just a very light touch of sulfites to create a masterpiece of depth, complexity and finesse.
Tasting Notes:
A wonderfully intense, brooding, dark, exotic and altogether refreshing Syrah, expressing the essence of Côte-Rôtie. Complex on the palate, there's pure, concentrated black fruit, pepper spice, mineral freshness, liquorice, roast coffee beans, earth and toast. The energy is outstanding, the length and persistence are awesome, while only13% alcohol.
Vintage Notes:
2013 was a difficult year from start to finish in the Northern Rhône, which relied on an Indian summer to bring ripeness to those who waited beyond September rains. The year started very cold and wet. Hail hit, too, with the result that the crop was small and that fruit struggled to ripen sufficient to give balanced acids and tannins. There was however a good spell of heat in the middle of the summer to advance ripening, as well as a very fine September. The harvest took place late for most. As a result, many wines are somewhat lean and edgy, especially when young. But, and as usual, the best growers, especially those who work more traditionally, have made delicious, balanced, ripe wines, both red and white. Note that given that the crop is small, again (!), prices are up, an additional reason to select only the best!
From 2 parcels of old vines on steep hillsides on the schist of Rozier in the Cote Brune and the granite of Mollard in the southern sector of Cote Rotie at Tupin. The vines are 40 to 60 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand.
D`estemmed, fermented in stainless steel tank, using natural yeasts and with very low use of SO2, two week cuvaison with some pigeage. The wine is matured 23 months in 60% new and 40% 2 to 4 year old oak barriques. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
