Northern Rhône, France

Domaine Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Saint-Joseph Rouge 2013

Organic Status:
12.34% (Number on label may differ)
The Gangloff version of St Joseph! Part whole bunch, aged in old 300 L oak barrels. Organic vines, purchased in 2007. Gorgeous!
Tasting Notes:
Fabulous perfume and intensity mark this wine that's also very gentle on the palate and thus strikes a beautiful balance. The fruit is classic Northern Rhône Syrah with aromas of cassis and raspberry lifted by notes of violets and roasted coffee beans. Very fine tannins support, gentle acidity refreshes a very persistent fruit and it's only 12.7% alcohol.
Vintage Notes:
2013 was a difficult year from start to finish in the Northern Rhône, which relied on an Indian summer to bring ripeness to those who waited beyond September rains. The year started very cold and wet. Hail hit, too, with the result that the crop was small and that fruit struggled to ripen sufficient to give balanced acids and tannins. There was however a good spell of heat in the middle of the summer to advance ripening, as well as a very fine September. The harvest took place late for most. As a result, many wines are somewhat lean and edgy, especially when young. But, and as usual, the best growers, especially those who work more traditionally, have made delicious, balanced, ripe wines, both red and white. Note that given that the crop is small, again (!), prices are up, an additional reason to select only the best!
From just one hectare on steep granite hillsides in the northern sector of St Joseph close to Condrieu in the Peyraud lieu-dit. The vines needed quite a bit of attention when Gangloff bought them in 2007 but the potential for an almost Côte-Rôtie like wine was clearly there and the vines have subsequently worked with Gangloff’s meticulous precision. The vines are 15 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand.
Nice traditional whole bunch fermentation, in stainless steel tank, using natural yeasts and very low use of SO2, two week cuvaison with remontage and a little pigeage. The wine is matured 22 months in 20% new and 4 to 5 year old 300 litre oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
