About:
Gangloff makes some of the world's great wines, two of them from Cote Rotie, and this is the younger vine version, from granite soils. It's stunning. This is what great Cote Rotie should be, a mix of perfumed fruit, dark mineral, roasted coffee character, silky astringency, floral, complex, uplifting. A lesson in great wine!
Tasting Notes:
This is just gorgeous, with a purity and finesse that few wines from this great Appellation possess. It has a fantastic aromatic expression of cassis, blackberry, black cherry, raspberry, rose, black pepper and violets. The palate comes with gentle tannins to support the clear fruit and cool acidity. Intense fruit, only 12.7% alcohol.
Vintage Notes:
2013 was a difficult year from start to finish in the Northern Rhône, which relied on an Indian summer to bring ripeness to those who waited beyond September rains. The year started very cold and wet. Hail hit, too, with the result that the crop was small and that fruit struggled to ripen sufficient to give balanced acids and tannins. There was however a good spell of heat in the middle of the summer to advance ripening, as well as a very fine September. The harvest took place late for most. As a result, many wines are somewhat lean and edgy, especially when young. But, and as usual, the best growers, especially those who work more traditionally, have made delicious, balanced, ripe wines, both red and white. Note that given that the crop is small, again (!), prices are up, an additional reason to select only the best!
Vineyards:
On steep granite hillsides in the southern sector of Cote Rotie at Tupin, Mollard and Combard. This is the “Cote Blonde” so named after the granite soil, which gives a more elegant, lighter, finessed wine than the schist in the “Cote Brune”. The vines are 5 to 20 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand.
Winemaking:
100% destemmed, fermented in stainless steel tank, using natural yeasts and very low use of SO2, two week cuvaison with remontage and pigeage. The wine is matured 22 months in new and 2 to 4 year old oak barriques. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
