Picpoul is a kind of Muscadet of the South, with its ripe lemon and apple aromatics and is a perfect accompaniment with seafood, especially oysters. The wine has rightly grown its reputation with the leadership of Felines-Jourdan over the last 10 years. Claude Jourdan’s Picpoul benefits from slightly later harvesting than most and enjoys that perfect combination of ripeness and freshness that comes from her well sited vineyards near the Bassin of Thau, near the oyster capital of Bouzigues, just south of Sete.
Tasting Notes:
This is suffused with brilliant aromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, sweet lemon, apple, anis, fennel, bergamot, with a touch of woodsmoke. The palate balances the almost honeyed fruit ripeness with a very lively lemon acidity that gives the wine its purpose and considerable length, making it perfect with oysters and other seafood.
Vintage Notes:
After a 2014 marked here by drought, 2015 was the opposite. Heavy winter rain started just after the 2014 harvest and replenished soil reserves. A very hot spring was later followed by a month long heatwave. Thus water and sunshine and heat. The result, a harvest of very good quality with slightly lower degrees, and with the wines gaining in drinkability, easier, and lively, with fruity, soft aromatics.
From 45 hectares in the Coulette and Cadastres vineyards, on gentle east facing slopes, benefiting from the sea breezes and Mediterranean climate, on a variety of different soils of red earth, gravel and chalky clay, which lend complexity to the wines. The vines are between 5 and 25 years old. Grapes are harvested between 20 September and 5 October.
Instead of cold settling (debourbage) for 48 hours, Claude kept the the juice and skins moving in contact at very low temperatures for 7 days in order to extract more aroma and richness before pressing gently into stainless steel tank. Then the wine was fermented very slowly during almost one month at temperatures controlled up to 18oC to achieve the balance of fruit freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine is matured 3 months on its lees in stainless steel tank. The wine is bottled lightly filtered.
