Claude Jourdan makes a brilliant version of Chardonnay. For although she’s in the Languedoc, where there’s heat and an ocean of cheap and simple varietals, Claude has a brilliant spot to produce white wines with fruit purity, some complexity AND freshness. Because her lagoon-side vineyards, just south of Sete, are always cooled and cleaned by sea breezes and frequently catch a light shower. Blind tasted, this could almost pass for a Maconnais!
Tasting Notes:
This is so stylish it comes as a surprise! Soft and silky, refreshing and medium bodied it offers, creamy flavours of oranges and apples, melon, hazelnuts, and acacia honey. Nicely dry but also juicy on the finish, it's a great mariage with a wide variety of simple dishes or brilliant on its own!
Vintage Notes:
After a 2014 marked here by drought, 2015 was the opposite. Heavy winter rain started just after the 2014 harvest and replenished soil reserves. A very hot spring was later followed by a month long heatwave. Thus water and sunshine and heat. The result, a harvest of very good quality with slightly lower degrees, and with the wines gaining in drinkability, easier, and lively, with fruity, soft aromatics.
Mostly from the Felines vineyard, on a gentle east facing slope, next to the Thau lagoon, benefiting from the sea breezes and Mediterranean climate, on a clay limestone soil. From 2009, Claude Jourdan has classified the wines as IGP Coteaux de Bessilles which she considers to be more valuable than IGP Pays d’OC. The Coteaux de Bessilles comprises hillsides of vines and garrigue in just 7 communes around Meze and is used by fewer than a handful of quality producers. In fact, the word Bessille comes from the word Bec which means silver birch, a tree which used to be grown there profusely but has been superseded by more shady and evergreen Mediterranean pines and garrigue. The vines are 22 years old. Grapes are harvested from late August.
Pressed very gently into stainless steel tank; cold settled then ferments very slowly during two months at temperatures controlled up to 18oC to get the balance of fruit freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine is matured 3 months on its lees in stainless steel tank. The wine is bottled fined and lightly filtered.
