About:
Prioundo means the beautiful valley in the language of Oc, the "langue d'oc". This wine wears an air of serenity. It's farmed biodynamically and made without sulfites, just a dash at bottling to give 25 mg/L SO2 Tot. It's also made with wild yeasts and half whole bunch, from a Rhône blend that's atypical here and comes out more mineral, floral and earthy than would a Southern Rhône wine. This shows why Les Clos Perdus is considered one of the top artisan farmers today in the Languedoc-Roussillon.
Tasting Notes:
A beauty with classic Grenache aromas of black cherry, strawberry confit, black pepper and black bitter chocolate that's lifted by the Cinsault with violets and raspberry. The palate is both sweet and crisply refreshing with silky, succulent tannins washing away the fruit richness and a lingering peppery back palate adds real character.
Vintage Notes:
While the late flowering caused widespread coulure in the Grenache, other varieties were not affected, and even reduced yields of Grenache probably resulted in greater quality if less quantity. The growing season was cooler and wetter than normal and grapes reached maturity around 2 to 3 weeks later than normal, with greater acids and less alcohol. As a result, the wines are fresh and vibrant, with great concentration, and a beautiful structure. This is a fantastic vintage, the best in the Languedoc and in the Roussillon for over 15 years.
Vineyards:
From the Corbières hills, near the village of Villesèque, on a hilltop at 140-160 metres altitude, surrounded by garrigue (and wild boar), which is ideal for organic farming, the clay soils are very stony and well draining. The vines are 30 years old. Grapes are hand harvested early between 15 and 21 September.
Winemaking:
All fruit had a 3 day cold soak before fermentation with wild yeasts. 50% of the stems were kept in. The Grenache and Cinsault were fermented in separate stainless steel tanks with regular punching down. The cuvaison lasted for 4 weeks before being very gently pressed in an old basket press. Blending of the two varieties took place 3 months before bottling. The wine was matured 6 months in stainless steel tank, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
