Domaine Charvin Côtes du Rhône 2013

Grenache 85%, Syrah, Carignan
Organic Status:
13.78% (Number on label may differ)
If you want to discover the real, traditional taste of Rhone wine, made by one of the great artisan producers of today, this is it. This is surely tomorrow's cult wine, lost today in the sea, the ocean, of mediocre, mass-produced, modern, technological Cotes du Rhone. Taste Charvin to re-discver, or discover for the first time, what great, real wine can be produced for a modes price, with a great terroir. Charvin Chateauneuf grows in stature and quality with every vintage. The Cotes du Rhone is one of the great teases. It's also organic and contains minimal sulfites. 2013 is a sublime vintage.
Tasting Notes:
Made in exactly the same way and from almost the same blend as this great producer's Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wonderful wine offers classic old fashioned Southern Rhône aromas of smokey Garrigue, toast, leather, black cherry, strawberry and black pepper. There's a unique cool, mineral savoury character on the palate that lends balance to the honeyed richness of the fruit, and the tannins, too, are very fine. Great drinkability!
Vintage Notes:
2013 will go down as one of the more difficult years in the last 20 in the Southern Rhône due to a cool wet spring, with coulure seriously reducing the overall crop, especially the Grenache, and delayed ripening. A wet winter was followed by a wet and cool spring. Not until June did fine weather arrive. Despite, finally, a fine, hot, dry summer, the growing season never caught up with itself from this slow start. But fine weather held enabling the harvest to take place particularly late. 2013 has produced a raft of delicious wines, perfectly ripe but lighter and fresher than usual, with usually less Grenache in the blend than usual.
13 hectares sited on soils of mainly galets roulés on a limestone-marl base and sandy soils around the Domaine adjacent to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. North facing slopes mean that grapes ripen more slowly and retain acidity that gives the wine freshness and finesse. The vines are 40 to 70 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand.
Very natural and the same as the Châteauneuf, in concrete tank, using whole bunches, wild yeasts, no additions except very minimal sulphur, the varieties co-fermented, during about 3 weeks, with temperatures controlled to no more than 33ºC and with a very gentle extraction. The wine is matured 18 months in concrete tank. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
