Grenache 85%, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Vaccarese
Organic Status:
14.41% (Number on label may differ)
Charvin is very special. It's hard to describe how much Chateauneuf-du-Pape has changed over the last decade towards a modern and heavily Parker-influenced style of wine; and we're not fans. Charvin, like Bois de Boursan, has rested true to the roots and traditions of this brilliant terroir. Works organically and makes his wines like his ancestors. A real artisan star of Southern France, if you want to discover the beauty of Grenache, stop here!
Tasting Notes:
Stunning! Charvin's wines get finer each year, regardless of vintage. Here's a mirage wine, effortless, weightless, airy, yet with power, depth, structure, elegance, freshness and complexity. Fantastic aromatics of strawberry, cherry, peach, apricot, garrigue, black pepper, black olive, coffee rejoice!
Vintage Notes:
2013 will go down as one of the more difficult years in the last 20 in the Southern Rhône due to a cool wet spring, with coulure seriously reducing the overall crop, especially the Grenache, and delayed ripening. A wet winter was followed by a wet and cool spring. Not until June did fine weather arrive. Despite, finally, a fine, hot, dry summer, the growing season never caught up with itself from this slow start. But fine weather held enabling the harvest to take place particularly late. 2013 has produced a raft of delicious wines, perfectly ripe but lighter and fresher than usual, with usually less Grenache in the blend than usual.
From 14 parcels of vines over 8 hectares near the Domaine in the north-west of the appellation. The soils are mainly galets roulés on a limestone-marl base and sandy soils. North facing slopes mean that, particularly in hot years, the grapes ripen more slowly and retain acidity which gives the wine freshness and finesse. Mediterranean climate. Charvin cultivates the grapes organically. The vines are 40 to 100 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand.
Utterly traditional, simple and non-interventionist. Whole bunches are lightly crushed into concrete tank and fermented using only wild, yeasts and no additions except very minimal sulphur, Temperatures are lightly controlled and the ferment lasts usually around a month before pressing. Light extraction is carried out by remontage. The wine is matured 24 months in concrete tank. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.

We gave up reading or reporting the Press since there's an excess of free wine writing and blogging (our website included). Most of it is dull (please excuse US) and almost all of the professional wine media is probably paid for advertising.
