From Nadia and Christian Charmasson’s biodynamic estate in Tavel, using Tavel fruit as well as LIrac, this is one of the most beautiful, perfumed natural wines I’ve tasted this year. It’s made by whole bunch ferment and bottled and labelled by hand. This is Grenache at its most spectacular outside of old school Chateauneuf. You sense the warmth as well as the depth of Provençal flavour.
Tasting Notes:
Gorgeously perfumed wine with black and red cherry, strawberry, prune, black olive, asian spice, Provençal herb, bacon, very classic and very lovely. The palate is smooth and velvety, with very clear, ripe fruit and gently refreshing, lightly astringent tannins. An uplifting soil to glass transfer wine!
Vintage Notes:
Very, very good! 2012 winter was freezing, cleaning up the vines (but also killing many old vines), spring was wet and cool, helping the water table, and the summer was largely hot and dry, conditions which have made for a very good vintage. Yields were low, but the quality high, with aromatic and complex fruit, good freshness, despite low acid levels at harvest, and ripe tannins.
Nadia and Christian own just 1 hectare of vines of red grapes surrounded by the forest of Clary near Roquemaure just west of the Rhône river across from Châteauneuf. It's an area of outstanding natural beauty. The soils are galets and an erosion of humus from the forest. The vines are trained traditionally in free-standing gobelet on gentle south-facing slopes. The vines are around 70 years old and yield around just 12 hl/ha. They are biodynamically farmed. The climate is Mediterranean with the northerly Mistral wind to benefit the vines.
The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September into small platters, to protect the fruit and to remove any berries not perfectly ripe and healthy. Upon picking, they're immediately moved into a refrigerated truck in the vineyard at 6ºC. This protects against any oxidation or risk of fermentation. In the cellar, whole bunches are placed into stainless steel tank under a blanket of CO2 and sealed. No crushing, no yeasts other than wild, no sulfites, of course, no extraction, just an infusion. The fermentation that takes place is thus intra-cellular in total absence of oxygen, and begins at 20ºC and doesn't rise above 26ºC. The result is fruit, energy, freshness. After 11 days, the wine is pressed and put back into tank to mature for 18 months before bottling by hand un-fined and un-filtered.
