About:
Yves Gangloff came to Condrieu from Alsace almost 30 years ago. His brother, an artist living and working in the Chateau d’Ampuis before Guigal bought it, had told him there was work available. He met his wife Mathilde, found work, initially with Delas, and stayed. Little by little he bought and rented small patches of vineyard and released his first wines in the mid 1990s. Now, with the spectacular quality and style of his wines, and the extremely limited production, he’s one of the superstars of the region and indeed of France.

Gangloff is based in Condrieu, the cellar and family house being just below the Cote Bonnette where he has vines, together with vines in the Chery lieu-dit. In Cote Rotie, his vines are in Combard, Mollard and Rozier. All the vines are on steep hillsides so all work has to be carried out by hand and it’s staggering how much labour is required to manage the vines. In the early summer when vine shoots are growing fast and require tying up to the stakes known as ‘echalas’, Gangloff works with around 30 people in the vines to complete the work, more even than during the harvest. He’s similarly fastidious and meticulous in every aspect.

In the cellar, Gangloff mixes modern and traditional methods. He destems some but not all of the crop and depending on the vintage. He uses wild yeasts and manipulates the wine as little as possible. Vinification of the whites is partly in new oak. Maturation is by lengthy ageing in small oak barrels, with a proportion new without racking and minimal use of sulphur. Yet the wines are never oaky, never ‘pushed’, always suffused with energy and personality and classic Cote Rotie or Condrieu aromas.

Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine 2013

Syrah 97%, Viognier
Gangloff makes some of the world's great wines, two of them from Cote Rotie, and this is the younger vine version, from granite soils. It's stunning. This is what great Cote Rotie should be, a mix of perfumed fruit, dark mineral, roasted coffee character, silky astringency, floral, complex, uplifting. A lesson in great wine!

Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noire 2013

Syrah
One of Gangloff's best ever wines. Yves has never compromised his style. Very much like Laurent Charvin or Jean-Paul Versino further south, he works a classic, great terroir in a classical manner: organically and making the wines by mostly, usually, whole bunch with minimal intervention, just a very light touch of sulfites to create a masterpiece of depth, complexity and finesse.
