Claude Jourdan’s uncle’s family have been making wine in the Languedoc for generations and in 1983, Claude’s mother associated with her brother to purchase the beautifully sited 40 hectare Domaine Felines. Since then they have added 70 hectares in the sector to create the Domaine Felines Jourdan. Claude joined her mother in 1995 and took over the winemaking. Claude’s father worked full time as an engineer and spent his spare time working for the estate and took his holidays to do the harvest. Very much a family enterprise! The Domaine is a star of the under-explored Languedoc appellation Picpoul de Pinet. The wines get rave reviews from the New York Times to Decanter. Named after its unique grape variety, Picpoul, the appellation is situated just south of Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. It’s a great terroir for white wines due to the combination of Mediterranean sunshine tempered by cool northern winds and sea breezes which give both humidity and vital freshness. And Claude Jourdan makes a super range of incredibly good value varietal whites from Chardonnay, Roussanne and Sauvignon Blanc, all of which taste much more expensive than they are - and are in hot demand from savvy local negociants, too. Her ‘secret’ is to harvest a little later than practically everyone else around her in order to get more intense and rich aromatics without losing the key freshness in her wines. These wines are perfect with seafood and Mediterranean fish. Indeed, the neighbouring town of Bouzigues is famed for its oysters from beds in the lagoon next to the Felines Jourdan vineyards. Thus Picpoul is the natural choice to drink with them as dozens of the excellent local restaurants attest!

Wines from Félines Jourdan

Félines Jourdan IGP Coteaux De Bessilles Chardonnay 2015

Claude Jourdan makes a brilliant version of Chardonnay. For although she’s in the Languedoc, where there’s heat and an ocean of cheap and simple varietals, Claude has a brilliant spot to produce white wines with fruit purity, some complexity AND freshness. Because her lagoon-side vineyards, just south of Sete, are always cooled and cleaned by sea breezes and frequently catch a light shower. Blind tasted, this could almost pass for a Maconnais!

Félines Jourdan IGP Coteaux De Bessilles Sauvignon 2015

Sauvignon Blanc
Claude Jourdan’s Sauvignon is another brilliantly executed varietal that profits from the warmth of the Languedoc to achieve ripeness while also using the cooling sea breezes to keep the freshness that Sauvignon requires to keep its bite. Her version has an amazing resemblance to a Loire Sauvignon with its smokey mineral lemon aromatics, while possessing a bit more body.

Félines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet 2015

Picpoul is a kind of Muscadet of the South, with its ripe lemon and apple aromatics and is a perfect accompaniment with seafood, especially oysters. The wine has rightly grown its reputation with the leadership of Felines-Jourdan over the last 10 years. Claude Jourdan’s Picpoul benefits from slightly later harvesting than most and enjoys that perfect combination of ripeness and freshness that comes from her well sited vineyards near the Bassin of Thau, near the oyster capital of Bouzigues, just south of Sete.
