Domaine Bois de Boursan

To Wines

Wine Spectator: “Jean-Paul Versino makes some of the Appellation’s most peppery, garrigue-filled reds. Nothing seems to change at Bois de Boursan including the well-preserved Jean-Paul Versino himself. Always one of the most distinctive wines in the Appellation.”;

Robert Parker: “Jean-Paul Versino has produced a bevy of beautiful wines”;

Rhone Report: “Very traditional, these wines are not to be missed. There’s nothing modern about them and tasting the Felix at the end of the day was like a breath of fresh air.”

WA EWS: "Our big winner this evening [January 2013] was the same wine that finished first in 2008. That wine was the amazing 1998 Bois de Boursan “Cuvée des Felix,” which gets the EWS vote as the “wine of the vintage.”"

Livingstone-Learmonth: "Really good, reliable, traditional Châteauneuf".

Jean-Paul Versino at Bois de Boursan is one of the few growers who stick to absolutely traditional methods and his wines stand out for their wonderfully classical and typical Chateauneuf aromas. This is Chateauneuf as it used to be, always, not the overly-produced, modern, sweet and easy style. Bois de Boursan wines are fabulously aromatic, with tremendous texture and energy; not perfect but perhaps the most soulful wines in the world.

Much of the Domaine’s success lies in its terroir: 27 parcels of very old vines over 18 hectares in all sectors of the appellation. Trees border many of the parcels which helps to cool the vines a little it and protect a bit from the Mistral; the different sectors lend complexity and are usually harvested at different times to take advantage of optimal ripeness. Most vineyards are at around 100m altitude and gently slope south, south-east or south-west; all vines are bush trained and worked organically and meticulously.

In the cellar, Versino continues tradition by using whole bunch fermentation, wild yeasts, keeping extraction to a minimum, pressing in an old basket press, ageing for nearly two years in large old oak barrels and bottling unfiltered and unfined. When tasting, the wines reveal themselves slowly, appearing almost light to start, but they build on the palate to offer layers of elegance, complexity and structure, and finish powerfully.

Jean-Paul Versino is the third generation; his Grandfather came from Piemonte and his Dad painstakingly built up the estate for Jean-Paul to take over in 1987 – a story similar to the Pierre Usseglio brothers, who are, in fact, Jean-Paul’s cousins!

Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2014

Grenache Bl 35%, Clairette 35%, Roussanne, Bourboulenc
This white is a treasure of old school finesse and terroir purity! Quite different from the many modern white Châteauneuf-du-Papes (or single varietal wines), it achieves this as a result of having never veered away from traditional methods. It's a classic blend of both grape varieties and soils, thus natural complexity and issues from old vines farmed organically. The winemaking is simple, with a light touch, non-interventionist, made and aged in enamel tank for the fruit to express itself clearly. Great freshness and finesse.

It comes from some of the oldest vines of the Appellation organically farmed on a mosaic of different soils. This, along with whole bunch fermentation and long ageing in old foudres, are the key to the natural freshness, beauty and complexity of this wine. Will age gracefully for 30 years or more.
