Châteauneuf-du-Pape

To Wines

The southern Rhone's most famous appellation,  Chateauneuf is a small village located 10 kilometres north of Avignon next to the Rhone river in Provence.  It was chosen by the Popes as their summer residence in the C14 and the wine was famous at that time Established as an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Controlee) in 1936, the first in France, it now covers just over 3,000 ha.  13 grape varieties are traditionally permitted.   Today, the main grape varieties are: Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette and Bourboulenc.  The soil is mainly made up of large round quartz stones mixed with sandy red clay and there are sectors which are more limestone and others more sandy.  This is the driest region of the Côtes du Rhône; the prevailing wind is the Mistral and there are approximately 2,800 hours of sunshine per year, the heat of the day is stored by the stones and released at night.

Wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2014

Grenache Bl 35%, Clairette 35%, Roussanne, Bourboulenc
This white is a treasure of old school finesse and terroir purity! Quite different from the many modern white Châteauneuf-du-Papes (or single varietal wines), it achieves this as a result of having never veered away from traditional methods. It's a classic blend of both grape varieties and soils, thus natural complexity and issues from old vines farmed organically. The winemaking is simple, with a light touch, non-interventionist, made and aged in enamel tank for the fruit to express itself clearly. Great freshness and finesse.

Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2012

Grenache 70%, Mourvedre, Syrah etc
If you want old school finesse and terroir purity, this is the wine! It stands apart from the crowd having never veered away from traditional methods. It comes from some of the oldest vines of the Appellation organically farmed on a mosaic of different soils. This, along with whole bunch fermentation and long ageing in old foudres, are the key to the natural freshness, beauty and complexity of this wine. Will age gracefully for 30 years or more.

Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2013

Grenache 85%, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Vaccarese
Charvin is very special. It's hard to describe how much Chateauneuf-du-Pape has changed over the last decade towards a modern and heavily Parker-influenced style of wine; and we're not fans. Charvin, like Bois de Boursan, has rested true to the roots and traditions of this brilliant terroir. Works organically and makes his wines like his ancestors. A real artisan star of Southern France, if you want to discover the beauty of Grenache, stop here!
